McLean Mill National Historic Site

As equipment restoration consultant and then mill construction manager, Barry designed and constructed/restored, with a dedicated team of forestry workers, the original 1928 steam powered saw mill to an operating heritage attraction.  The original 40’ riding timber-framed carriage was reconstructed to the original details, including the set works, receeder and bunks/knees. Barry’ talented team restored all of the other equipment, including the over-and-under 48” headframe saw, main steam engine, carriage steam engine, steam niggar, overhead log turner, log haul hoist and seven canvas belt waste conveyor systems. Over 140 Babbitt bearings were restored to operating condition.

Hedley Mascot Mine Camp Stabilization

Constructed in 1935, the Hedley Mascot Gold Mine Camp, situated on a precipice 2800 feet above the Similkameen Valley floor and surrounded on three sides by 700 foot cliffs, had fallen into a state of unstable ruin sliding off the mountain. Over the course of three summer stabilization programs, the camp was stabilized with rock-anchored concrete buttresses, steel beams constraining vertical logs, extensive heavy timber reconstruction and new galvanized sheet metal roofs.

Brilliant Bridge Restoration

This historic 1911 Doukhobor Suspension Bridge across the Kootenay River at Castlegar had reached a state of advanced decay by 1994, when Barry McGinn undertook preliminary stabilization design work. McGinn Engineering & Preservation Ltd., with AECOM as sub-consultants, provided restoration design and project manager for the restoration of the bridge, including a new curving trestle approach, new bridge deck, new guardrail design and an innovative threaded rod coupling design to replace the corroded hanger rod bottoms. Restoration of the bridge steel work required steel repairs and a full encapsulation for lead paint blasting and a three coat epoxy coating.
